Best areas to stay in Athens for first-time visitors

Athens rewards staying central: the ancient sites, the old town and the best food are packed into a walkable core. For a first visit, choose one of these five neighbourhoods and you can't go far wrong.
Plaka — the classic old town
Neoclassical lanes directly under the Acropolis. You are two minutes from everything you came to see, surrounded by tavernas and pedestrian streets. It's the most touristic choice — and there's a reason everyone makes it.

- Watch out for: higher prices and evening foot traffic
Koukaki — local and walkable
Just south of the Acropolis Museum, Koukaki keeps the walkability and drops the crowds. Cafés fill with Athenians, not tour groups, and the metro (Syngrou-Fix) is on your doorstep.
- Best for: travellers who want "local but central", longer stays
- Watch out for: fewer big sights on the doorstep — you walk 10 minutes to them
Monastiraki — markets and rooftops
The flea market, Ancient Agora views and the city's densest concentration of rooftop bars. Direct metro from the airport (line 3) makes arrivals painless.
- Best for: nightlife-lovers, market browsers, one-night island connections
- Watch out for: noise — pick a home on a side street
Psyrri — food and night owls
A once-gritty quarter now full of mezze bars, souvlaki institutions and street art. Very lively after dark, quieter in the morning.
- Best for: food-first travellers, groups
- Watch out for: weekend noise until late
Kolonaki — polished and calm
Designer shopping, galleries and the cable car up Lycabettus Hill. The most upscale central option, a pleasant 15-minute walk from Syntagma.

Getting in and out
- Airport → centre: metro line 3 to Syntagma/Monastiraki (~40 min), the X95 bus to Syntagma (24 h), or a fixed-fare taxi
- Ferries: Piraeus port is ~20 minutes from the centre on metro line 1 — for early sailings, stay near a line-1 station or book a taxi the night before
