Where to stay in Mykonos — for couples, groups and families

Mykonos is small — about 20 minutes end to end by car — but the area you pick changes the holiday completely. Here is the honest version of each base, and who it suits.
Chora (Mykonos Town)
The whitewashed old town is the island's heart: restaurants, boutiques, Little Venice sunsets and the nightlife. Staying here means walking home after dinner — and hearing other people do the same until late. Parking is genuinely difficult.
- Best for: first visits, couples who prioritise dining and nightlife
- Think twice if: you're a light sleeper or travelling with young children in August
Ornos and Platis Gialos
The south-coast bays closest to town, with calm, sandy, family-friendly beaches, beach restaurants and regular bus and boat-shuttle connections. Most villas here have sea views and are 10 minutes from Chora. This is the safest all-round choice, and it's where much of our own Mykonos collection sits.
- Best for: families, mixed groups, anyone who wants beach plus easy town access
- Think twice if: you want isolation — these bays are popular
Panormos, Ftelia and the north
Wilder, quieter beaches and open horizons. The north wind (meltemi) blows stronger here in July and August, which surfers love and umbrella-renters don't. Villas are more private and you'll want a car or ATV.
- Best for: groups renting a villa with a pool, repeat visitors, peace-seekers
- Think twice if: you don't want to drive
Ano Mera
The island's inland village — a real working town with a monastery, tavernas at local prices and no crowds. Central position means every beach is 10–15 minutes away.
- Best for: budget-conscious stays, longer visits, travellers who want the local rhythm
